New stars are born as Pirates shut out the Bulldogs

Coming out ready to play against the Jefferson Bulldogs Friday night were the new Pittsburg Pirate stars, senior quarterback Brad Lewis, senior running back Jacorian Smith, aka Jaco, and the Pirate defense. In a 42-0 blowout victory over the Bulldogs, Lewis was 12 for 18 for 216 yards passing while Smith had 15 carries for 203 yards.

The game started out with Jefferson's David Police making a great return of the opening kickoff, only to have the Pirate defense stiffen up and give the ball to the offense with no points on the board.

Following the stellar defensive play, Lewis led a drive that was capped off with a 36-yard bomb to senior wide receiver Kaymon Farmer. Lewis orchestrated another long drive that ended with a 10-yard scamper by Smith. Senior wide receiver K.B. Brannon was the recipient of the 2-point conversion that followed.

After an interception by Farmer, Lewis hit a wide-open junior running back, Derek Allen, with a 10-yard touchdown pass. Smith had a 98-yard touchdown run called back for holding, but Lewis still marched the Pirates down the field to set up a 36-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Daniel Silva to make the halftime score 25-0.

Smith struck again to start off the second half, when he finished off a long drive with a 28-yard touchdown run. Silva finished off the third quarter with a 26-yard field goal.

Lewis sat out the fourth quarter, and Smith put an exclamation mark on the game with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Deion Williams carried 13 times for 35 yards for Jefferson; the Bulldogs finished with 59 rushing yards and 104 total yards.

The Pirates will travel to Palestine Friday night at 7:30.

Stormy reading

I guess I'll just have to slog my way through the latest Daniel Silva thriller, Portrait of a Spy, instead. David Gibson: Not scary from my viewpoint either. I used to read one of the great big Dickens novels each summer, but got out of the habit.
