As an island community in the 21st century, Guam finds herself at a "make it or break it" point in her life. The world is quickly changing with every day and while Guam may be a little behind in such matters as pop culture and unlimited access to all and everything, Guam, and the entire Pacific region, is nonetheless on the forefront of experiencing massive environmental changes.
As the Pacific region is made up of island and coastal communities, it is and will be one of the first to feel many of the changes, good and/or bad, due to the world's environment and its people.
Guam can be considered an epicenter for our particular part of the Pacific, as it is one of the largest islands in the area and possesses the most opportunities, resources and necessities. However, Guam has only slowly begun to pick up speed as an innovative leader for environmental issues.

In May 2010, New England fishermen switched from a ''days at sea'' system, which tried to stop overfishing largely by limiting how many days fishermen could fish, and how much of each species they could catch on those days. By the time it ended,
Redfish in the northern part of the state are thought to be fully recovered from historic overfishing. The 18- to 27-inch size limit will remain, as will the one-fish-daily rule in southern counties. These rules also go into place Feb. 1.

The action is part of the NGO campaign launched last October in the northeast Atlantic to demand an end to overfishing and a change in fisheries management through the proper reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), reported Greenpeace.

In the 2006 animated blockbuster Happy Feet, an alienated emperor penguin named Mumbles found empowerment through tap-dancing, and in so doing managed to both attract a mate and stop the overfishing that imperiled his Antarctic habitat.
