Wendell O. Samuelson
Wendell O. Samuelson, 83, of Bear Valley Springs, died of a stroke on July 2nd at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at First Baptist Church of Tehachapi. Officiating will be Dr. Jeff Kaplan, Pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Church.
Born and raised on Swede Hill in Jamestown, NY, he spent his youth exploring the Chautauqua Lake region. War time enabled him to take a leadership role with the Boy Scouts of America at an early age. As soon as he was eligible, he enlisted in the Navy, and was in the first group of U.S. personnel to enter Nagasaki following the atomic bombing. He finished his Naval service in the Korean War.
Following his graduation from Rochester Business Institute, he married Joyce McChesney of Falconer, NY in 1952, and began a lifelong career in the Office Equipment business by joining IBM. While raising their two children in the Endicott, NY area, the family was transferred to Los Angeles, settling in Orange County in 1965.
While servicing typewriters at Dart & Kraft, Wendell was introduced to Bear Valley Springs, purchased a lot in 1970, and completed their dream home in 1989.
Mr. Samuelson belonged to many service organizations over the years, including Masons, High Twelve, Rotary, Kiwanis, Elks, and various Chambers of Commerce.
Active in the National Office Machine Dealers Association (NOMDA), he served as President of the Southern California chapter in the 1980s.
Known as “Wendy” when he was younger, and “Sam” at IBM, Wen’s Favorite hobbies were flying his Piper Tri-Pacer and traveling the world with Joyce and their C of C friends. After Joyce passed away in 2008, he joined Toastmasters and pursued speaking engagements on the subject of nutrition. Along the way he joyfully discovered love again with Donna Wood of Lompoc, CA.
Surviving are his son Dale O. Samuelson of Newport Beach, his daughter Wendy Daniels of Brookings, OR, his brother John R. Samuelson, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
