With recent, seemingly sporadic tornadoes twisting through North Georgia, causing damage and sometimes tragedy, Floyd County Emergency Management Director Scotty Hancock encourages North Georgia residents to take every precaution necessary to protect themselves against these violent storms as a part of the continuing Severe Weather Awareness Week. Assemble a disaster supplies kit containing first aid materials and essential medications, canned food and a can opener, at least three gallons of water per person, protective clothing, bedding or sleeping bags, a battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries, and written instructions for turning off electricity, gas and water if authorities advise you to do so. Scotty does a fantastic job but I want to point a huge mistake out. He stated that a tornado warning is when a tornado has been spotted. Years ago this was true but currently this is false. A tornado warning can mean one of two things. Either a tornado has been spotted or the radar has indicated circulation. The radars have got so advanced they allow the meteorologists to give advance warnings in attempts to save lives. However, I see a problem. With these new techniques also means that more false warnings have been issued. They have issued so many warnings in the past years and a tornado never touches the ground. I am afraid that this will make people start doubting the warning system. If you stop and think about it we were all taught the story about the boy who cried wolf. Well the NWS is crying wolf way to much. So when a real tornado is on the way some may choose not to listen. There is a solution. Tornado Warning - Should mean that there is 100% proof that this storm does have a tornado inside of it. This has to be confirmed by either eye witness or from previous damage from where it has already been. This should never be issued based on radar indicators.
