To celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, my husband and I decided to take a big, romantic vacation to… Iceland.
I'm not sure why we thought hiking on glaciers would be the best way to commemorate 20 years of marriage, but it was different than anything we had ever done before and my thought was, if I fell through a glacial fissure, I didn't have to worry about picking his socks up off the floor for the next 20 years.
I was actually very excited about seeing and walking on a glacier. Shocking though this may be to you, I do not live in a part of the world that is populated by glaciers. I live in a part of the world that is populated by minivans and strip malls. The closest I usually come to a glacier is when the back deck ices over in the winter, I step out onto it, and wipe out.
Fortunately, we were much better outfitted for our glacier hike than I am when I wipe out in my bathrobe on my back deck. Dressed in fleeces, ski pants and jackets, wool hats and gloves, and hiking boots with ice-piercing crampons strapped on, I looked like I was on my way to pick up my sled dogs for a six month journey to the South Pole with my friend Nanook, rather than do a half-day hike on a glacier tongue.
Although this get-up may have been a bit of overkill for our stroll around the ice field, years of summer camp had taught me that one should always be prepared for any outdoor emergency. This is why I also brought extra hand warmers, snack bars, and… a roll of toilet paper.
Being fairly certain that there were no restroom facilities on the glacier, I wanted to make sure if the need should arise, I would be well-equipped in a quilted, cottony-soft, two-ply kind of way.
This came in handy about halfway up the glacier when the three cups of coffee I'd had that morning kicked in and I had to go.
"I have to go," I whispered urgently to my husband.
"Go where?" he asked looking around.
"To the bathroom," I responded.
