Nancy Cook-Monroe: Heloise treats Woman's Club to hints
The Woman's Club luncheon Aug. 17 was so well subscribed that I feared, walking from the nearest parking spot blocks away, I'd develop an underarm stain only Heloise could get out. Fortunately, the speaker that day was the nationally syndicated columnist herself, Ponce Evans, aka Heloise, a near-lifelong San Antonian ready with answers to life's everyday household imponderables. Her column, Hints from Heloise, runs daily in the Express-News.
In a Q&A with Express-News fashion writer Michael Quintanilla, "Heloise II," as her mother called her, said she's been helping kids at Texas State University with domestic challenges. "They think spraying sheets with Febreze is a good substitute for washing them," she said. "I told them the white residue would stick to the sheets and they said, 'No, we vacuum them!' "
A more universal problem is ring around the collar. Heloise advises cheap shampoo to remove it. Better yet, she said, "Wash your neck!" Heloise's readership probably is more adept but always looking to improve, judging by the popularity of the column, which runs in almost 500 newspapers.
Woman's Club members and guests including Barbara Yu, Tawana Timberlake, Dona Liston, Debbie King and Gloria Goodman were amused to hear that the original Heloise sprayed her hair with Nestle's Tips 'n Streaks.
"President Johnson was not often speechless, but when Mother walked in ...," Heloise said of a party at the Johnson ranch to which her mother wore a blue dress and blue hair.
Laura Sistrunk and Angela Pfeiffer were among the members admiring the luncheon centerpieces, baskets of scrubbers, rubbing alcohol, baking soda, lemons and wadded-up newspaper - after it'd been read, of course.
