September 2011 One pitch and one big loud and long ouchUNSOLICITED OBSERVATIONS from The Man Cave while watching Johnny Cueto pitch another good one and get nothing for it — the sad, sad tale of Cueto’s star-crossed season. Maybe he should try shaving off those jerry-curls.
SOME DAYS IT just doesn’t pay to slide your feet out from under the covers and Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker wishes he had stayed in bed at the Chicago Westin Hotel Wednesday.
He did everything right, everything the manager was supposed to do during the most important moment of Wednesday’s game.
THE SITUATION: Tie game, 3-3, with the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Cubs had two runners on base with one out.
THE DECISION: Lefthander Carlos Pena was due up, he of the .135 batting average against lefthanded pitchers this year. It was a no-brainer. Bring in lefthander Bill Bray, who had given up one home run all year to a lefthanded hitter.
THE OUTCOME: Bray’s first pitch was a dangling breaking ball. Pena turned on it and nearly knocked a train off the ‘El’ tracks outside Wrigley Field. It cleared the right field bleachers and took a chunk out of Sheffield Avenue as it crash-landed. A three-run homer.
And that made it 6-3 and that’s the way it ended as the Reds lost two of three to the woebegotten Cubbies.
