Temple Beth Shalom Lights Outdoor Menorah
Members of Temple Beth Shalom , 193 E. Mount Pleasant Ave., celebrated the first night of Hanukkah on Tuesday by illuminating a large outdoor menorah in front of the synagogue.
About 100 adults and children from the TBS Religious School attended the Tuesday night event. Assistant Rabbi Dan Dorsch and Education Director Leah Beker led the recitation of prayers.
“One of the children pointed out that there were Christmas lights across the street,” Dorsch said. “Every time they look at the menorah, I want them to be proud of the way our community come together to celebrate all our holidays together at the same time.”
Dorsch first lit an indoor menorah before flipping the switch to illuminate the large electric menorah overlooking Mount Pleasant Avenue.
Head Rabbi Geoffrey Spector was not present because he was en route to Israel for the temple’s annual trip to the Holy Land.
After the candle lighting ceremony, congregants ate latkes, or potato pancakes, as well as jelly donuts and egg rolls. Jews traditionally eat oily foods during Hanukkah to commemorate the oil used to sustain the Temple menorah in Jerusalem in 168 B.C.E.
In all, the temple served 192 latkes and 200 egg rolls, according to Executive Director Steve Kandler.
