A life shaped by sports
The scholastic competitive scene has changed a lot since I was in grade school and high school, especially in big cities. When my daughter and two sons were growing up, they were involved in sports from grade school on. The big difference from when I was a kid is that their activities were highly organized. I can’t remember them involved in a “pick up” game of any kind. They were either in an organized practice or in a scheduled game.
“Back in the olden days,” as my kids would say, we just got a bunch of guys together and played all day, if we could get away with it. I lived in what was then called a housing project, or more simply, “the projects.” There were eight buildings of 40 apartments each, built for servicemen back from the war. In my building, Building 2, we had at least a dozen or more boys all about the same age; instant teams with natural sworn enemies - the teams in the other buildings. All year long we played something: baseball, football (real tackle - without helmets or pads - which no doubt accounts for some of my behavior in my later years), basketball and hockey, either on local ponds of flooded back yards.
I especially loved the summer. We’d be up at the crack of dawn and after a hasty breakfast, we were on the ball field. We played until the sun went down, with brief breaks for lunch and supper. There really wasn’t much else to do. No cable, no Internet, no Xbox, no Smart phones, just baseball all day long. We played with cracked bats, nailed together and covered with adhesive tape. If we had a white baseball, that was a real treasure. Mostly we had old balls covered with black electrician’s tape. Hard to see those suckers in the twilight. I think I still have the bruises from being plunked in the side. Our only breaks from sandlot ball were for Little League games (with real umpires, which cut down the fights and arguments considerably) and in our teenage years, Babe Ruth league.

One of the many things I like about Sleepy Eye is the support our town gives to its teams and athletes, young and old. I also like the idea that participation at almost every level seems so much more accessible than what I experienced growing up.

It was a major undertaking for the family. The pioneers didn't leave any plans or blueprints. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS' Jason Davis went "On the Road" to Sleepy Eye to see history in the making. Click play to hear their story.
I just like old things.” Antiques dealer Bev Hattig of Fredericksburg said she was having a “super” day. Primitives and garden items seemed to be selling well, said Hattig, who comes to the Clear Lake antiques show every year. Sleepy Eye stonewear

And finally Elizabeth Hurley was on the set of Gossip Girl in New York swanning around in a dressing gown. She may have been there to film a cameo, something along the lines of Geri Haliwell in Sex and The City, good old bloody Geri.
