Comcast program offers low cost service, laptop to qualifying families

Families across the country have a new option to receive low-cost Internet service if they qualify.
Comcast introduced a program last month titled "Internet Essentials," a broadband initiative geared to families that have children eligible for a free lunch under the National School Lunch Program. It would provide low-cost Internet service, affordable computers and digital literacy training.
Here are the main components of the program:
- Participants will receive residential Internet service for $9.95 per month
- No price increases, no activation fees or equipment rental fees
- A voucher to purchase a Dell or Acer netbook for $149.99 plus tax through Comcast
- Access to free digital literacy training in print, online or in person
Families who have at least one child eligible to receive a free school lunch can take part. Other requirements include a residence where Comcast offers Internet service, no overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment and have not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the past 90 days.
"Low income families are not as connected to the Internet as other families," said Robert Grove, a spokesman for Comcast. "We want to change that. Our research shows that there are three obstacles to connecting to the Internet -- cost of a computer, cost of broadband Internet service and the lack of understanding of how important Internet access is for students. We feel this addresses all three areas."
Grove said school districts have supported the low-cost offer.
Chambersburg Area School District supports the program to offer service for the neediest families in the district.
It could help level the playing field for students who didn't have access before.
"It's a high need," said Chris Bigger, director of curriculum. "Learning at home with families is an ever-growing need and the future of education. It's what we need now, but it'll be what the future is all about. Imagine if every kid had access to Internet. The possibilities are endless.
