Jazz notes: Sinatra tribute, Billy Hart, Los Mas Valientes, Branford Marsalis
It has been 96 years since Ol’ Blue Eyes was born in Hoboken, and 13 since he left this earth. On Friday, Sinatra acolytes from across the state will gather at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, as they do every year, to celebrate his memory in song.A dozen performers, including Bobby Ballack of Sea Girt and Greg Meyers of Plainfield, will perform Sinatra classics with the 17-piece Red Bank Big Band, directed by Joe Muccioli.
Tickets start at $25, and some proceeds will support Red Bank’s Jazz Arts Project, which hosts jazz concerts and workshops throughout the year.
The theater is at 99 Monmouth St.; visit countbasietheatre.org .
Hart at Dizzy’s Jazz musicians like to call Montclair drummer Billy Hart "Jabali," which in Swahili means “moral strength”: He plays every beat as if his, and our, lives depend on it. This immediacy and his almost unparalleled dynamic range have made him the rhythm man of choice for Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Herbie Hancock, and he has more than 500 recording sessions under his belt.
Hart’s talents truly shine when he leads a band, as he does tonight through Sunday at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway and 60th Street, New York. Each member of this group — saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Ben Street and pianist Ethan Iverson — has his own fully formed conception of jazz, but defers to the emotional truths Hart speaks on the drums. The band features compositions by all members, and has been known to introduce new material every night, so expect to be surprised.
Tickets are $30 to 35 ($15 for students). Shows are at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., with additional shows at 11:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. Visit jalc.org .
Los Mas Valientes Los Mas Valientes plays much more than salsa: Their repertoire spans the danceable styles of Latin America’s African diaspora, which include mambo, bomba, guaracha and merengue.
