Talented Erny eyes 2016 Olympics

EARLY next year the world’s top 15-year-old table tennis players will gather in the Caribbean to determine the best of the best.

Erny Tsao, of Marsfield, will be one of them.

Erny, who attends James Ruse Agricultural High School, Carlingford, is the first Chinese Australian from NSW to qualify for the 2011 Global Cadet Challenge in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in January 2012.

He earned his place after winning the Oceania Cadet Under 15 Challenge in Guam, the US territory, in April.

Erny, a left-hander, is also the youngest Chinese Australian to win the National Under 18 Mixed Doubles championship, when he was just 14.

When he returns from Puerto Rico he will join the NSW under 18 team to contest the Australian Junior Championships at Hurstville Aquatic Centre, from September 24 to October 1.

He is currently in South Korea playing the International Table Tennis Federation junior circuit with the Australian Cadet Under 15 Boys team.

Erny is this week’s Northern District Times Junior Sports Star, sponsored by Rebel Sport and Events Cinemas, which is providing a family pass for every nominee published.

He started playing table tennis against his older brothers, Joey, now 25, and Owen, 21, who both played for NSW, at the relatively late age of 10.

“My brothers were better than me but after a while I could beat them,” Erny said, from the Korean Table Tennis Association Australia in Ryde, where he trains.

He turned 15 on June 30.

“I used to play just for fun before that, but when I was 10 I put a lot more effort in, trained harder and became better.”

Erny said he also enjoyed badminton, cricket and tennis, but just for fun.

Table tennis is his main game.

“It’s a fun sport, which is good for young people to play because when you are younger you have quicker reflexes,” Erny said.
