It was one of the first mansions in Fort Wayne.

Its chandeliers could produce light with either electricity or natural gas, reflecting a time when the local Jenny Electric Co. produced electricity only for a few hours each night.

When a third floor was added in the 1880s, the salvaged stairway installed was too long. So carpenters built side stairs up and over where the new stairway partially blocked a bedroom doorway.

The Swinney Homestead, with all its beauty and quirks, will be one of a dozen attractions offering free admission during the Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown event from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The event is co-sponsored by Fort Wayne Newspapers, the business agent for The News-Sentinel and Journal Gazette.
