Poison Center ready for Halloween health scares
There are many scary things going on during Halloween, most harmless fun.
But there is always a chance of creeping poison alert. In most cases they are preventable and in most common cases, not a huge health risk.
Each year the Iowa Statewide Poison Control Center sees a lot of calls about glow sticks, plastic tubes filled with a liquid gloss that helps make door-to-treaters more visible in the dark.
They are the safety precautions very well, but they can also cause problems if and when they break open.
"It's the call we get high," said Tammy Noble, education coordinator, nurse and certified specialist in poison information at the Iowa Statewide Poison Control in Sioux City. Last year, the center received 47 calls about the whole state of glow sticks during the week of Halloween. There were over 40 calls each of the two previous years.
Children chew on sticks or break them, get the liquid in the mouth or eyes. Noble said the liquid may cause a burning sensation, but will probably not pose a huge health hazard.
"It's usually something (parents) can be treated at home and not having to take them to hospital," said Noble.
Poison operators generally advise parents to wash the liquid out of the mouth of the child and perhaps give them an ice cream or popsicle to soothe the burning sensation that can last two or three hours. If it gets in your eyes, flush eyes for 15 minutes.
The greatest danger to the health of many people probably think is contaminated candy or other treats.Noble said health scares involving Halloween treats are rare, but parents must take the precaution of checking their child deals with all that unusual.
"If the wrapper is off, then it is preferable to the ground," said Noble. "They usually have a lot of candy, and they will not miss a single song or two. Something suspicious, it is best s' they avoid eating it. "
Noble said to check to see if the candy wrappers are opened or appear to be altered. Homemade treats should be eaten only if you know the people who dropped in a bag to treat your child.
