DECKED out in a casual cotton shirt and white slacks, David Yee looks like the kind of man you would imagine seeing riding a horse across the outback of his native Australia. But the newly appointed face of the Life Inspired TV channel (known simply as Li) in Malaysia says he is really more of a stay-at-home kind of guy.
Seated comfortably at an Italian restaurant in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Yee looks very much in his element. We meet up just before a food and wine appreciation lunch he is hosting for local media in conjunction with his introduction as the Malaysian ambassador of Li.
I was early because I was in the kitchen making the pasta for all of you, the 42-year-old says to my disbelief. It takes me a while to realise that he is serious!
I love Italian food. At least, that is what I tend to do mostly when Im at home. My other favourite food is roasts, so I do roast meat and roast vegetables. They are very easy to cook, and thats what I liked about it, he says.
Indeed, after you get past the ruggedly good-looking exterior, Yees interests attest to his self-professed homey outlook.
Besides whipping up a meal whenever he can, he also collects wine, enjoys furniture design and loves to dance with his wife and three daughters in his living room during weekends.
His prized possession, he says with a gleam in his eye, is his Eames lounge chair. Youve really got to sit in one, he says. Its not very comfortable, but in terms of the way it looks, its just a beauty.
His love for design, style, and the finer things in life blends nicely with his role as a host in Lis two-minute vignettes.
That is why when he was presented with the opportunity to host these segments a year ago to introduce some of the latest lifestyle trends in the Asian region, he did not hesitate for long.
