WES FRANKLIN: Crowder streets named for famous Missourians

While that didn’t materialize — though it’s still a cool idea — the other day I was reading a book on Camp Crowder and why the streets there were named what they were. Most of those streets are still here today. A few are heavily-used public roads. Many are within the boundaries of the Crowder College campus and also traveled daily, albeit more lightly. Many others are private roads. Some are abandoned. Likewise, I still don’t know most of the stories behind the 29 local veterans who also had roads designated for them when Camp Crowder was established. Those names, now roads, are: Beasley, Beaver, Biggs, Burdick, Buxton, Casner, Clapper, Cochran, Corder, Cover, Crisp, Davis, Edmonds, Edwards, Everson, Fannon, Hacknery, Hughes, Karls, Leason, Link, Payton, Reeves, Ross, Stegall, Storey, Wiggins and York. The first is Lyon Drive, the main turnoff from State Highway 59 to Crowder College. Most of you probably already know that was named for Union General Nathaniel Lyon, who was killed at the Battle of Wilsons Creek on Aug. 10, 1861. Personally, I don’t consider Lyon, who was originally from Connecticut, a Missourian — and I seriously doubt that he did either. Lyon never even lived in this state, aside from the six months he was stationed here. Some folks may argue with me on this point, but I’m used to it. Nevertheless, the fact remains that Lyon Drive — which you probably travel on every time you visit Crowder College — is named for Gen. Nathaniel Lyon. Another street you inevitably have to travel on to get to Crowder is Doniphan Drive, which runs northeast-southwest in front of the campus. It is named for Alexander William Doniphan (born 1808), a Missouri attorney, military commander and politician. Doniphan was born in Kentucky but spent most of his life in Missouri. He led troops in the Morman War (though he prevented the execution of Joseph Smith) and in the Mexican-American War.
