Man jailed on gun, wildlife charges

A Sutherlin area man was arrested Tuesday morning on firearms and wildlife charges, Oregon State Police said.

Shawn Stevens, 38, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of elk antlers and unlawful possession of deer antlers. His mother, Marjorie Stevens, 58, was charged with unlawful possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Both were taken to the Douglas County jail.

State troopers from the Fish & Wildlife Division said they searched the Stevenses’ home at 279 Taylor St. after receiving a tip alleging that Shawn Stevens was involved in unlawful hunting.

The arrest is not related to another investigation into the illegal kill and waste of a trophy white-tailed buck deer in Sutherlin earlier this month, police said.

Police identify victim of RV fire

BROOKINGS — A woman found dead in a burned motor home east of Brookings in Southern Oregon has been identified, Oregon State Police said.

The dead woman is believed to be Ashley Anne Knaus, 21, who lived in the motor home with her father, Sgt. Teresa Bower­sox said. He was not home when the time the fire started late Sunday or early Monday.

Police said there is no evidence that the death is the result of a crime. The fire is under investigation but appears to have been accidental.
