Pet Talk: As school begins, beware canine anxiety
The dog days are over. Or at least they will be soon, when school starts and Fido's playmates (schoolteachers, this includes you) return to the classroom. If your dog starts acting strange right around this time, it's probably not your imagination.
"All summer long, the kids are around, paying a lot of attention to the family, and there's a lot more interaction," says Al Holzer, who runs Bark Busters Home Dog Training with his wife, Lisa. "When the kids go back to school, dogs find themselves alone a lot more and there's not as much contact with the family, the children or 'the pack,' and that can result in behavior problems."
Aside from the change in pack dynamics, "any sort of significant change in a dog's routine has the potential to trigger anxiety, and depending on the dog, that anxiety can manifest itself in a bunch of different ways," says Dr. Valli Parthasarathy, an animal behaviorist and veterinarian at Portland-based Synergy Behavior Solutions.
Those can include excessive barking, whining or howling, destructive behaviors, general disobedience or toileting problems that didn't happen before.
Pets also may exhibit stress in less obvious symptoms, such as panting all day, pacing or excessive salivation, or refusing to eat or drink, Parthasarathy says.
While no one breed seems to be particularly predisposed to the condition, Parthasarathy says, "dogs that are used to having people around a lot are going to have more difficulty."
Cats can be affected, too, but (not surprisingly), the condition is rarer and tends to occur more often when an owner is gone for an extended period of time, she says.
"It's not that the dog or the cat is being spiteful or difficult," says Tanya Roberts, manager of the behavior and training department at the Oregon Humane Society.
It's just that Fido may be accustomed to his midday trip to the park or playing with kids for several hours during the afternoon.
