Gunther Cunningham on Lions' Ndamukong Suh: NFL has never seen anything like this
ALLEN PARK — Sorry, NFL. Ndamukong Suh isn't the one with a problem on his hands. It's you who has the problem.
And don't look for any sympathy from Gunther Cunningham.
The Detroit Lions defensive coordinator doesn't know how to contain the devastation caused by a 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle who moves like a 250-pound linebacker any better than you do.
Then again, it's not his job.
In fact, quite the opposite: Cunningham's job is to design a game plan that best uses the 24-year-old Ferrari-made monster truck to destroy opposing offenses.
"I've been here for 30 years," he said, "and I've seen a lot of change in this league. The problem with the league is they've never seen a tackle like this.
"That's their problem."
Ever since he entered the NFL as the Lions' top draft pick, Suh has lived up to the notoriety that followed him from his career at Nebraska.
He finished the 2010-11 season with 10 sacks, 66 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a recover fumble, which he returned for a touchdown. He was named All-Pro and started in the Pro Bowl.
In his rookie season.
As an interior defensive lineman.
Suh also made waves for his relentless attack; his total disregard for easing up on his opponents.
He was flagged and fined for nearly taking Cleveland quarterback Jake Delhomme's head off in Detroit's third preseason game. He was flagged for bringing down Dallas' Marion Barber by the running back's own dread locks – a perfectly legal maneuver, for what it's worth.
Then, in Week 13 against Chicago, Suh drew another unnecessary roughness flag for striking Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in the back of the helmet with his forearm. Replays showed Suh pushed Cutler to the ground with both hands. Really, really hard, yes. But no forearms were involved in the taming of that Bear.
Still, the hit drew a fine from the league.
Now, Suh has the third fine of his short career after slamming Cincinnati's Andy Dalton to the ground after the Bengals quarterback got rid of the ball. Suh maintains he didn't know Dalton no longer had the ball when he slammed him to the Ford Field turf.
