Attracting enchanting hummingbirds

Late summer is the peak period for hummingbird activity in Upstate South Carolina. Twelve feeders in our yard attract an untold number of hummers and provide endless hours of entertainment as they hover, dive and zip around the yard at what appears to be ultrasonic speed. They have amazing flight control and can fly backward, upside down and stop almost instantly.

About ruby-throats

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the only species found in our area, except for the occasional individual of another species that strays into our range. It is amusing to watch the tiny jewel-colored birds stake out their favorite feeder and try to protect it from all interlopers. They dive-bomb each other and even chase away much larger cardinals and red-bellied woodpeckers, as well as bees that venture near their feeders.

The inquisitive little Ruby-throated hummingbird is the most common hummer in eastern North America. They quickly become acclimated to nearby human activity and will hover near a person wearing bright colors to investigate their presence. They can even be tempted to feed from a hand-held feeder if you are patient and minimize movement. It is an exceptional treat to observe these marvels of nature this closely.

Ruby throats favor open woodlands, meadows, transition zones, grasslands, parks and backyards. They eat nectar from flowers, tiny insects caught in mid-air or captured on vegetation and nectar substitutes placed in special feeders. They favor tubular-shaped flowers that hold more nectar.

After a brief courtship, the female builds a nest the size of a golf ball that is attached to a limb with spider silk. The outside is camouflaged with lichens and the inner lining is thistle, dandelion or cattail down. Nests are often re-furbished and used for more than one year. One to three eggs are laid and incubated from 12 to 16 days. After hatching, only the female cares for the young. Nestlings remain in the nest for 14 to 31 days, and once they leave the nest as fledglings, the female cares for them for approximately 10 more days.
