Camping trailer explodes at Carlton house; one sent to hospital
CARLTON — A retired farmer is being treated in the burn unit at Strong Memorial Hospital after an explosion and fire Tuesday morning at his Point Breeze Road home.
Emergency personnel responded at 7 a.m. to a call of an explosion at 1173 Point Breeze Rd., a house owned by Roy Bannister, 92, and his wife, Doris, 93, according to Orleans County sheriff’s deputies.
Sheriff Deputy David Foeller said investigators believe the explosion originated in a camping trailer that was parked inside a partially-enclosed carport attached to the rear (east side) of the house.
Mr. Bannister was in an adjacent room when the explosion occurred, police said. The trailer and carport were destroyed and the house sustained substantial damage from the ensuing fire, police said.
Mr. Bannister suffered serious burns, but was talking with emergency responders while being transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight, police said. He is in the Strong burn unit, his family said Tuesday evening. Mrs. Bannister was not injured.
Carlton fire chief Matt Olles said two of his assistant chiefs were among the first to respond to the explosion.
One, who works at Brown’s farms, had just punched in for work when he heard the explosion. When he arrive on the scene only minutes later, flames were shooting over the roof, he said.
Olles said Bannister, an artist, had a studio at the back of the house and was working there when he smelled fumes. He began shutting off switches in an effort to determine the cause of the smell, when the propane was ignited.
Olles also said an EMT at the scene said it appeared Bannister was burned over 40 percent of his body.
The Bannisters have been married for 70 years. The couple has seven children and 40 grandchildren.
Mr. Bannister served two years in the Navy during World War II. Then he was a farm manager in the Adirondacks before he started a career as an agricultural teacher. He worked at Holland, Roy-Hart, Lyndonville and Hilton. In 1958, the Bannisters moved to Point Breeze, where they raised beef cattle and grew fruit. Today, their son Roger works the farm.
