I connected with this song. It was released in 1963, three years after my experience at Camp Laney in Mentone.

I am homesick. Perhaps the age of nine I was not emotionally prepared to be sent for a month. My parents apparently had no problem with that.

As the son of Sherman, I also wrote these letters to my parents. A relic is framed, hung on a wall in bathroom.

"Dear Mom and Dad, I'm so nostalgic. The food here is terrible. I know that when you visit I want to go home with you. When you come, bring me two decks of cards and my other glove. Got to go, time for baseball."

I signed it as any typical boy would at that age. I wrote, "Your loving son, Ben." It was a passive/ aggressive ploy to put a guilt trip on them.

It didn't work, of course, but by the time they came for their visit, I was having a great time and wanted no part of going home early.

People aren't lukewarm about their camp time. There's a love/hate relationship. My Mary is a good example. She doesn't have a love relationship about her time at Camp Juliet Lowe, the Girl Scout camp also located on Lookout Mountain.

She generally begins her camp story by saying, "They made us sleep under tents on raised platforms and they lined us up like we were in a concentration camp for showers."

That story is hilarious but I won't try to relate it to you here. If you see her, ask her about it. It will be worth your time, I promise.

She may still harbor a grudge against her parents for sending her, but I doubt it. I do know she makes a hissing noise every time we drive past the camp's entrance.

There's also the fact she never gets invited back to camp reunions, like her sister does. The phrase "happy camper" didn't originate with Mary.

Strangely, I love to go back to Camp Laney. We often take a slow drive through the grounds when we're in Mentone and memories, now over 50 years old, come bubbling up. There's a smell there that just takes you back.
