La Crepe du Jour brings a touch of Paris to Little Bavaria

Backpacking around Europe after college in 2008, Renee Crimmins and her then-boyfriend Matt practically lived on the crepes street vendors sold in Paris, light pancakes sprinkled with sugar and lemon or stuffed with ham and cheese.

"You could pay a lot more and order the same thing in a fancy restaurant, served on a plate with a fork and knife, but for $5, you could get one wrapped in paper and eat it while you walked around the city," she said.

Pronounced "kreps" in France rather than "krapes," they made a lasting impression on the Crimmins. It was only a year later that the couple, now married, opened La Crepe du Jour in Frankenmuth's River Place.

And that's about the same you'll pay at the storefront café that makes you feel as if you've stepped into a Paris courtyard. French music plays in the background and murals of French storefronts with checked curtains and flower-filled window-boxes circle the walls. Wrought-iron café tables fit in around vintage streetlights and Crimmins sports a jaunty beret.

"We opened with 12 crepes, six sweet and six savory," Renee Crimmins said as she prepared the restaurant for the lunch rush. "Two months later, we added the coffee drinks, the lattes and cappuccinos and espressos."

This past year, with the menu now offering more than 30 crepes, they added made-to-order salads to the mix.

"Not everyone likes crepes so we thought we should offer something that they could eat, too," she said, laughing.

A recent chilly morning brought orders for a lot of hot drinks – "Hand-warmers," one customer called them – and crepes filled with everything from bananas and Nutella to eggs, sausage and cheese, also known as the Walking Omelet.

While the sugar and lemon or Grand Marnier and sugar are the most traditional, those stopping by for what Crimmins calls "A taste of Paris in Little Bavaria" prefer her personal favorites.
