Preliminary school budget shows jump in property taxes

The school board will formally act on the final budget at their meeting in September after the actual numbers are out for evaluation.

Several locations have been approved by the board, including Tom Hansen, who was appointed to the vacancy created by certified personal Renee Hamilton a year off. But Hansen, who moved here from Bellevue, will teach special education and reading in elementary classes. Jacca Paisley, who had these features last year, will take up the post of classroom teacher in Hamilton. Other hirings approved by the board were Sarah Miller, 9th grade volleyball coach; and Phyllis Mock and Lynn Fortkamp, bus drivers. Supt. Fisher said he has two custodial positions yet to fill. Resignations approved included Janiel Kimble, 9th grade volleyball coach; Angela Lewis, custodian; and Candi Druse, lunchroom helper. With a new main entrance under construction, the current school lobby area will be remodeled into a more student-friendly design based on board direction last week. The changes in the lobby area will include repainting (most of which is done), and the installation of couches, casual tables and chairs, a 58-inch plasma TV and wall hangings. Stephanie Rau presented the remodeling designs to the board which will cost between $8,000 and $10,000. The new furniture is expected in about six weeks. The Pom Poms organization will have the school concession stand lease for another year at the same $750 annual fee. It was noted in Supt. Fisher’s report that the school will be switching to Pepsi products in the concession stand and the school’s vending machines. He said the soft drink company provided enough financial incentives to switch from Coke. At annual savings of about $1,500, the board approved a change in its auditor for 2011, 2012 and 2013. Supt. Fisher noted one of the accountants with the previous firm started her own firm, Bently and Kisker, PC.
