Manufacturing week: How we got here
Fast forward to today. Britain has slipped to seventh place in a world manufacturing league table dominated by the US, China, Germany and Japan. A large slice of industry is in foreign hands but a combination of market leaders and a host of niche players is providing a stronger base for what is being heralded as a new age for manufacturing.
BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce in defence and aerospace, GSK in pharmaceuticals and BP in better days are among the best in the world in their sectors. ARM and Autonomy are making distinctive contributions in advanced technology and although Britain does not have its equivalent of Silicon Valley, the Thames Valley continues to house the key players in motor racing.
Britain’s breakthrough on the industrial scene was rapid and dramatic, helped by a wealth of scientific talent, inquisitive inventors and craftsmen. Steam for power and the pioneering engine developed by James Watt (1769) along with coal fuelled the revolution. Bessemer provided a fillip for steelmaking. Davy for lamps and Stephenson for transport
There were many others. John Kay’s fly shuttle (1733), James Hargreave’s spinning jenny (1770) and Samuel Crompton’s mule (1779) gave 'King Cotton’ in Lancashire a comfortable lead over competitors. Textiles was in the vanguard of the revolution, the forerunner of mass production and factory life. Lancashire’s cotton mills continued to be Britain’s biggest source of exports even after World War 1, before the slogan 'Britain’s bread hangs by Lancashire’s thread’ began to wear thin as foreign competition forced extensive rationalisation.
A new generation of industrialists drove the manufacturing machine in the Victorian era. Robert Armstrong turned Tyneside into a shipbuilding and armaments 'factory’ via Vickers Armstrong. Birmingham became the heart of Midlands manufacturing and the city of a thousand trades. George Cadbury, Joseph Rowntree, the Lever Brothers and Sir Titus Salt linked philanthrophy to business to try and refute the charge that the Victorians exploited the working class and child labour.
