Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce presents awards, welcomes new officers at gala ...
For the second year, the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce honored a Person of the Year at its annual holiday gala, held this past Friday, Dec. 2. "This award isn't necessarily for a business person; it's meant for a person in Irondequoit who has given a lot of their time and energy to others," said Florence Bianco, chairwoman of the chamber's business recognition subcommittee, as she presented this year's award to Angels of Mercy founder Mary Jo Colligan of Irondequoit.
"She is not only helping needy girls and woman (with the charity), she is also helping all of us to give of ourselves," Bianco said of Colligan.
Colligan said she was "stunned, to say the least" with the award, and noted that since she started Angels of Mercy four years ago, "it has been a shower of blessings ... our mission has just grabbed people's hearts."
For the first time this year, nominations for Person of the Year were solicited from the communit.
Perhaps the Angels of Mercy charity’s best-known project is sewing dresses for the “Dress A Girl Around the World” program. To date, local women have sewn well 17,000 dresses that have gone to girls literally around the world. The charity is now the New York State representative for Dress a Girl, Colligan said, adding, "This is God's ministry; he is the vine ... We are the branches ... We are blessed to be a blessing." The chamber’s holiday awards also include recognitions each year for Best Renovated Building and Best Landscaping. This year, those awards went to the East Ridge Professional Building owned by dentist Robert Buhite at 564 E. Ridge Road; and to Stanley Urbanski of the Urbanski Insurance Agency, 1134 Titus Ave., respectively. A special appreciation and lifetime membership award was also presented to videographer and filmmaker Ron Mix.
