First Person Account: Consumer Genetics Test

I took one of these genetic tests and talked with a genetic counselor about the results. My goal was to find out whether knowing what’s in my DNA can improve my health. Ordering a genetic test online was as easy as buying a book on Amazon.com. I put one test in my “cart”, typed in my credit card number and checked out. A week later, I got my very own “spit kit.” After filling a tube with saliva, I shipped it back to 23andMe, a personal genetics company based in California. “We usually think about what are the possible things that we can find when we do testing and is that something you really want to know,” said Jamie L’Heureux, a genetic counselor at the University of Iowa. Genetic testing can tell you whether you have increased or decreased risks for diseases or conditions ranging from cancer and diabetes to restless leg syndrome and back pain. “The information that is here is based on what we know right now,” L’Heureux said. “It’s evolving as we learn more.” 23andMe requires additional consent forms to find out whether you have genes linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, diseases that are so far incurable. “Some people feel very strongly they want to know that information so they can prepare and plan, but a lot of people feel like that would be a huge burden on them,” L’Heureux said. For specific diseases, genetic information can help doctors craft a personalized treatment or avoid dangerous side effects. My genetic test revealed I have increased sensitivity to the blood thinner warfarin. “There actually for this one is a way to calculate in your dosage based on your genetic information, your weight, diet and other information,” L’Heureux explained. “This one would be an interesting one to mention to your doctor.” Do these online genetic tests measure up to doctor-ordered blood tests? The 23andMe tests aren’t FDA approved because a doctor doesn’t order them. Online tests are also generalized and may not fit every person. But the 23andMe tests are done in certified labs and can be ten times cheaper than doctor-ordered tests. I paid $207 for the test and a year’s access to the information online. What more do you want to learn? Keep it simple.
